Facilities:

The various facilities offered by the Indian Museum are:

Video corner -- Regular video-shows are arranged for the visitors, besides special Video-show programme for the students.


Bookshop -- Publications of the Indian Museum and plaster replicas are being sold from the bookshop.


Mobile Museum -- A museum on wheel containing twenty diorama cases with representative collections of all the six sections of the Museum reaches the doorsteps of villagers in the country-side to create awareness about the rich cultural heritage and natural wealth of India.


Mobile conservation laboratory -- Commissioned in February, 1999, the first of its kind in India the mobile laboratory is affording technical help to smaller museums in the districts and rural areas for the conservation of antiquities.

Training programmes -- Three types of training programmes are conducted every year by the Museum under mass education schemes (1) In-service museum training course, (2) Short course in museum studies and (3) Practical training in museum method for the post-graduate students of the Museology Department, Calcutta University. Besides, there is a regular programme of gallery classes for the students to correlate museum education with school, college and university curricula.

Educational film shows -- Both outdoor and indoor film shows are arranged under mass education programme.

Library -- Indian Museum library is mainly functioning for promotion of research by it's curators and technical persons. But library facilities are also accorded to and for scholars, college and school students.

Sketching permission in the galleries -- Art college students and other students are permitted to sketch the displayed objects in the galleries with a nominal fee annually.

Photography -- Museum possesses a Photography Unit for the documentation work. Cameras are allowed for the visitors with a fee of Rs. 50/- (without stand) and Rs.100/- (with stand), without any additional lighting,for taking photographs inside the galleries. Scholars,students and others may get photographs taken by the photo unit of the museum on payment.

Temporary exhibitions -- Museum organises temporary exhibitions mainly with the specimens of the reserve collection.

Exhibit of the Month : A monthly exhibit show case is placed in the entrance lobby which is meant for monthly exhibition of objects kept in the museum.

Inter-state exhibition -- Inter State exhibitions are organised to build up cultural contact with different states of India.

International exhibition -- Museum participates in a number of international exhibitions held in other countries under cultural exchange programme of the Government of India.

March to November (10.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.)
December to February (10.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.)
Closed for the public : Every Monday, Republic Day (26th January), Holi Festival, Independence Day (15th August), Mahatma Gandhiji's Birth day (2nd October), Dusshera or Vijaya Dashami, Diwali, Id-ul-fitr.


Guided tours : 10.30 a.m., 11.30 a.m., 12.15 a.m., 02.15 p.m. and 03.15 p.m.
