THE ALPHABET TREE
Gifted by the Indian Museum at the Bhasha Udyan (Surendranath
Park)

On 18 May 2001, the museums world over celebrated International
Museums Day on the theme "Museums: Building Community".
The theme adopted by International Council of Museums Advisory
Committee underlines the importance of the social role of the
museum and highlights the institution in the service of society
and of its development. This annual event provides the opportunity
to draw the public's attention to museum programme through activities
taking place on and around 18th May. |

Being conscious about her responsibility towards the society
the Indian Museum, Kolkata has installed a 10' high metal tree
with sixty alphabet printed on its leaves which will reflect
the development of Indian scripts from Indus Valley date to the
present. |

THE ALPHABET TREE |

This `Akshara Vriksha' (Alphabet tree) has been installed in
the Bhasa Udyan at the Surendra Nath Park in front of Raj Bhavan
as an extra-mural-educational activity of the Indian Museum.
The alphabet represent almost all the major Indian languages
as well as ancient scripts of India such as Brahmi, Siddhamatrika,
Nagari,. Proto-Bengali, Grantha-Tamil and others. |

Indian Museum has already gifted three `museum corners' in
the Metro Railway stations during the tercentenary of the city
of Kolkata. The present exhibit will be considered as a unique
feature
in promoting the national integration.
Among the dignitaries present were Prof. Pabitra Sirkar, Sri
Kumar Roy, Dr. Swaroj Ghosh, Prof. Bratin Mukherjee, Sri Jyoti
Bhushan Chaki and Sayed Mustafa Siraj.
The Alphabet Tree is a permanent exhibit. |
