The earliest painting is an illustrated palm-leaf manuscript dated in the 22nd. regnal year of 'Govindapaladeva' of the Pala dynasty of Bengal assignable to the late 12th. century A.D.

The collection is particularly rich in Mughal paintings depicting primarily portraits, book illustrations and varied scenes of court and palace life.

There is also a rich collection of miniature paintings from various parts of India.
